There was a lot of buzz about town in the UX community this evening and with good reason. Not only were there two highly entertaining and informative events, but these gigs marked the beginning of five straight days of UX! All centred around the Fluxible conference happening this weekend, there is a lot to be excited about.

Girl Geek Dinners

Girl-Geek

At the Communitech Hub this evening, Girl Geek Dinners kicked off their 2014 season by welcoming Facebook’s Dani(elle) Malik. There she fights the good fight as a Product Design Manager, and she stopped in to talk about data and its influence. "Not everything can be measured", she noted. "Data can’t measure sentiment, trust, feeling. Data is only part of the story." She continued to share many insights into the "personality" of data & how we as designers can establish a relationship with it. What an awesome way to kick off the 2014 event series.

UX Book Club at UX Waterloo

UX-Book-Club

Meanwhile over at SevenShores Urban Market, UX Waterloo's UX Book Club hosted a "long table" event of their own! They were thrilled to have an intimate and interactive event with Giles Colborne, author of Simple and Usable. Using many examples from his work at cxpartners, Giles emphasized how simplicity is not concrete nor is it exact. "Simplicity is a personal thing; [as designers], we aim to make it simple for these people in this situation." His book and anecdotes spawned lots of lively and engaging conversation.

Tomorrow night the fun continues with Method Jam, a joint venture with two of Fluxible's sponsors, Boltmade and Heist. If you can't make it, no sweat — tune in here tomorrow night to get the inside scoop, pictures and more from the event.
